Description

Status: Full Time

The Johns Hopkins University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering (JHU-DMSE) seeks applicants for multiple tenure-track faculty positions with preference for the assistant professor level.  We have particular interest in computational materials science, advanced materials characterization, materials for energy, and biomaterials, but candidates in all MSE areas will be considered.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has fourteen tenured and tenure-track faculty, several other research and teaching faculty, plus affiliated faculty in most divisions of the University.   JHU-DMSE leads the Materials Characterization and Processing Facility (MCP, https://engineering.jhu.edu/MCP/about/) and the Materials Science in Extreme Environments Consortium (MSEE, https://hemi.jhu.edu/mseeura/), contributes to leadership in major JHU research centers and institutes including the Institute for NanoBioTechnology (INBT, https://inbt.jhu.edu/), the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI, https://hemi.jhu.edu/), and the Ralph S. O'Connor Sustainable Energy Institute (ROSEI, https://energyinstitute.jhu.edu/), and offers educational programs at the undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. levels.  DMSE research expenditures are over $10 million/year, and its collaborative research impact is far higher. More information about JHU-DMSE can be found at engineering.jhu.edu/materials.

The Whiting School of Engineering comprises well over 200 full time tenure-track and other faculty in nine academic departments with a total annual research budget of over $100 million. Research partnerships with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Applied Physics Laboratory, Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (all of which host JHU-DMSE collaborators) make the Whiting School of Engineering a unique research and educational environment. Student enrollment exceeds 1800 at the undergraduate level with over 1000 full time MS and PhD students. The Engineering for Professionals program enrolls over 2000 part time continuing education students and is the largest program of its kind in the country.

The University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans and individuals with disabilities and encourages applications from these and other protected group members. The Whiting School of Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering are committed to building a diverse educational environment. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is seeking candidates who, through their research, teaching and/or service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Consistent with the University's goals of achieving excellence in all areas, we will assess the comprehensive qualifications of each applicant.

Requirements

Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in an appropriate field by the time their appointment begins. Candidates must have demonstrated an ability to conduct outstanding independent research and show promise for excellent teaching, mentoring and entrepreneurship in all areas.

Application Instructions

Applications at all levels will be considered; salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a research statement, a teaching statement, three recent publications, and complete contact information for at least three references.  Applications must be made on-line at http://apply.interfolio.com/93936.  Review of applications will begin in October, 2021.  While candidates who complete their applications by October, 2021, will receive full consideration, the department will consider exceptional applicants at any time.
