ABOUT UC SANTA CRUZ
UC Santa Cruz is a public university like no other in California, combining the experience of a small, liberal arts college with the depth and rigor of a major research university. It's known as an unconventional place where innovation and experimentation is part of the campus's DNA. That playful, bold spirit still thrives today, all on a campus renowned as among the most beautiful in the world.
The Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program is an interdisciplinary graduate program involving faculty from the Physical and Biological Sciences (PBSci) Division and the Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE). The main goal of the program is to accelerate the acquisition of fundamental knowledge required to discover and develop new materials used in sustainable technologies. Specifically, the program will focus on the new materials with novel electronic, magnetic, and photonic properties that enable the realization of sustainable technologies. Sustainable technologies are those that make efficient use of energy and water resources, a theme that is of much importance to UC Santa Cruz and the State of California. Cohorts of scientists are trained through a two-year MS degree focusing on coursework and a PhD program focusing on research in experimental and theoretical aspects of materials. The MSE program is also uniquely positioned to enhance workforce development in the high-tech area due to the proximity of the UCSC campus to Silicon Valley.
The MSE Program Advisor and Coordinator provides support for a range of activities in MSE Program including communications, recruitment, workforce development initiatives, and administration (including providing administrative support to the Director and to the program's faculty-led administrative committees). The incumbent will use their skills as a seasoned, experienced professional to provide the full range of student services including advising students, faculty and management and helping resolve a range of student services-related issues. In addition, they will work closely with the program's management team to perform program evaluations and recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures.
