This position is in support of an ongoing multidisciplinary study of the environmental and climate history of southwestern Minnesota and how it may have influenced the ways in which people interacted with the landscape. The purpose of this project is to examine fluctuations in the magnetic mineral assemblage of lake sediments and to tie these fluctuations to nearby archaeological sites. This work will take place inside the Institute for Rock Magnetism.
⢠Work with Professor Feinberg and collaborators to analyze lake cores from southwestern Minnesota during summer 2025 at the Institute for Rock Magnetism (IRM) (30%). ⢠Use the IRMâ™s array of instrumentation (after sufficient training) to conduct measurements during the summer of 2025 (30%). ⢠Learn to interpret the data and prepare text and plots of data for reports and presentations (40%)
Required qualifications: ⢠Pursuing a degree in Earth & Environmental Sciences or a related field with a 3.0 GPA. Related fields include geology, soil science, environmental sciences, anthropology, environmental engineering, oceanography, materials science. ⢠Interest and willingness to work outside for a portion of the summer. ⢠Interest and willingness to learn to use geophysical instrumentation. ⢠Low-level programming experience. ⢠Organization skills and ability to work individually and in teams. ⢠Must be legally authorized to work in the US for any employer.
Preferred qualifications: Prior experience conducting rock magnetic experiments at the Institute for Rock Magnetism
