Graduate Conservation Intern, Summer 2025

The Conservation team is seeking a part-time Graduate Intern for a term of three months to provide support for the IMLS-funded project Conserving, Rehousing and Reunifying the Invaluable Elephant and Bovid Specimens at the American Museum of Natural History. The project will make critically necessary upgrades to the care and management of AMNH's collection of nearly 100 African and Asian elephant skills. This work will significantly enhance is accessibility and opportunities for research use. Collected during some of the most famous field expeditions of the early 20th centuries, the collection has enormous historical and scientific importance to Museum audiences. It is among the largest collections of its kind in the country in both number and size.

The Intern will work under the direction of the AMNH Conservator of Natural Sciences Collections and as part of the larger project team. They will carry out efforts focused on stabilization, rehousing, cleaning and documentation of elephant crania.

Applicants must have the capacity for meticulous care in the handling of collection materials and possess organizational and problem-solving competencies. This position is expected to start around June 2025 and will work approximately 9am - 5pm three weekdays/week.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

• Work with the AMNH project team to complete basic examination, conservation treatment and documentation activities. This may include cleaning, rehousing and archiving of conservation records.
• Support various other project activities including the research and testing of materials and methods in support of treatment, stabilization and rehousing of specimens, preparation and procurement of materials and tools used in conservation treatment and related administrative tasks.
• Contribute to the development and dissemination of content communicating project findings to collection care audience outside of AMNH through generating webpage updates, blog posts, conference presentations, posters, etc.

The expected salary for the Conservation Graduate Intern is $25/hour. This position is overtime-eligible.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.

• Bachelor's degree in fine art/craft, art history, museum studies, engineering/material science, chemistry, conservation, heritage preservation, architecture, the humanities or the sciences.
• Familiarity with conservation issues and procedures related to handling, examination, treatment, and/or documentation of museum collection items similar to those in the scope of this project.
• Experience with and expertise in digital photography.
