Job Summary: The Assistant Research Professional should show evidence of competence in the disciplinary area of the position and demonstrated promise of moving towards excellence in professional leadership, practice, and/or research and scholarly activities as appropriate for the position. As directed, individuals in this track level independently contribute to the planning and design of research and creative projects. He/she performs supporting research and creative activities such as data analysis, monitoring outcomes, performing lab maintenance, and/or performing experiments and creating creative projects. May assist in both short-term and long-term planning and project goals, as well as in research and creative proposals and dissemination of project findings. Additional Department Summary: The Solid State Additive Manufacturing Researcher (SSAMR) manages the cold spray and additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) capabilities. Executes research experiments using these technologies in the College of Engineering, specifically in support of the Manufacturing at the Point of Need Center. Ensures the solid state additive manufacturing processes remain in a safe and operational condition. Trains students and other researchers on the correct and safe operation of equipment. Conducts research in support of funded research programs, analyzes data generated, writes summary reports of results. Ensures Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) policies and protocols are adhered to.
Required Minimum Qualifications: A relevant post-Baccalaureate degree is highly preferred (Master’s degree or higher). For candidates demonstrating comparable independent research and creative productivity, a relevant four-year undergraduate degree (B.A. or B.S.) and one (1) or more years of documented relevant experience may be substituted. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Due to requirements of the funding source, must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident.
Skills and Knowledge: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to safely operate research instrumentation. Experience with training and supervising students on using research instrumentation. Solid working knowledge of materials science and engineering is needed.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with laboratory safety. Experience with electrical and/or mechanical systems. Experience with cold spray deposition, thermal spray deposition, friction stir welding, or other welding techniques is highly preferred. Experience with laser systems is highly preferred.
