The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks applicants for a tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry, starting in August 2024. This position will teach courses in organic chemistry and organic chemistry lab to both majors and non-majors. Additional teaching responsibilities may include organic and biochemical chemistry courses related to the new UNI nursing and material science and engineering programs. This position may also have the opportunity to develop classes in their particular area of interest to meet the needs of students. The Department is interested in candidates with research interests in any area of organic chemistry that is compatible within the infrastructure of UNI.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry currently has eleven full-time faculty members, three instructors, two laboratory specialists, and a secretary. An electronics technician also has work space in the Department. The faculty specializations include analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemical education, environmental chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. The Department emphasizes both teaching and research at the undergraduate level. The Department has approximately 100 students majoring in chemistry or biochemistry and offers ACS-certified BS degrees in both chemistry and biochemistry, as well as BA degrees with emphases in chemistry, biochemistry, and chemistry teaching. The Department also contributes to the graduate program in Science Education. The Department has excellent physical facilities for both teaching and research. Instrumentation in the Department includes FPLC, HPLC, various spectrometers (several UV-vis; far-, mid-, and near-IR; Raman; and 400 MHz multinuclear NMR), GC, LC-MS, GC-MS, TGA, DSC, AA, SEM, AFM, DNA analyzer, qPCR, electrophoresis equipment, ultracentrifuge, and scintillation counter.
