The Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington (UW) is seeking a Department Chair. The UW School of Dentistry is a 12-month service school. The School is an integral part of the Warren G. Magnuson Health Sciences Center and, as an orofacial health care center of excellence, it serves the people of the State of Washington and the Pacific Northwest. The School of Dentistry is one of six health science schools at UW, which also include the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work. More than 280 students are enrolled in the School of Dentistry's DDS program, including about 20 in the international DDS program. Another 120 students are enrolled in a variety of graduate programs, where they can earn a Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD), a MSD/Master of Public Health, or a MS or PhD. The School also offers a range of certificate and residency programs, as well as postdoctoral fellowships. In addition to Restorative Dentistry, the School comprises eight departments: Endodontics, Oral Health Sciences, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (including Oral Pathology), Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and Restorative Dentistry. The School of Dentistry is a financially sound unit within the UW system.

The Department of Restorative Dentistry includes the disciplines of operative dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics, implantology, dental anatomy and occlusion, dental materials science, and digital dentistry. The Department of Restorative Dentistry is the UW School of Dentistry's largest department in terms of number of faculty and number of courses in the predoctoral curriculum. The Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics is also within the Department.

Position Description

The Department of Restorative Dentistry is seeking a full-time Department Chair, at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (tenured or tenure-track). The Department Chair may also be conferred the Washington Dental Service Endowed Chair in Dentistry, a prestigious honor that recognizes the holder as an accomplished scholar with the ability to provide the dental profession with education on the business aspects of the practice of dentistry as a supplement to the clinical education that is available during and after graduation from the UW School of Dentistry.

The primary responsibilities of the position include: overall leadership and management of the Department, including facilitating achievement of department priorities, faculty mentoring and development, annual faculty evaluation, management of staff, and financial management; oversight of the Department's educational activities, including department-related clinical education and associated collaboration with other administrators involved in clinic operations; oversight and support of the Department's research and scholarly activities; and, oversight and support of the Department's service activities. The Program Director of the Advanced Education in Prosthodontics graduate program reports to the Chair of Restorative Dentistry. As a leader within the School of Dentistry, the Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry must provide visionary, collaborative leadership and promote the inclusion of all faculty, staff, and students to achieve School of Dentistry and Department goals within a framework of inclusive excellence. This position will perform teaching, research and scholarship, service and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Qualifications

Candidates must have completed a DDS, DMD, or foreign equivalent in dentistry, and specialty expertise in an area of restorative dentistry, which may include operative dentistry, fixed and removable prosthodontics, implantology, dental anatomy and occlusion, or dental materials science. Candidates must demonstrate teaching and research ability in restorative dentistry and/or related sciences as well as leadership and administrative skills.

Current Washington state dental license (or eligibility to acquire one, or a Washington state faculty license by the time of employment.)

Salary and Benefits

The annual base salary range for this position will be from $253,000 to $294,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include an Administrative Supplement for department chairs of $12,000 per year, and potential start-up funds depending on qualifications; and a lump sum moving allowance/relocation incentive payment.

Up to one day per week can be allocated to clinical practice, either in the UW Dentistry Faculty Practice, if available, or outside private practice if requested and approved by the UW.
