We are seeking an experienced Focused Ion Beam scientist who will provide scientific support to the Materials Characterization Processing (MCP) Core Facility in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE), Whiting School of Engineering. The successful candidate will manage the Thermo Scientific Helios 5 FIBSEM and the Scanning Electron Microscope labs (JEOL IT700 with laser, new Environmental SEM). The position will report to the Director and the Director of Operations of the MCP, and will also involve outward facing activities with the broader Johns Hopkins University, including the School of Medicine and the Applied Physics Laboratory. In addition, this position is the safety officer for the MCP. This is a full-time assistant research scientist non-tenure track faculty position.
The successful candidate will establish maintain the Helios FIBSEM and the two new SEMs, train users, participate in collaborative research, and develop new techniques. The MCP is committed to furthering the education and developing the career of their staff through attending workshops, meetings and training events.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Establish protocols for the FIB and SEM instruments
Maintain the labs
Teach new users and mentor the progression of student knowledge base
Ensure safety compliance of the MCP with University requirements
Develop new techniques
Interface with service engineers
Guide research directions in FIB and SEM applications with faculty, students and outside users
Collaborate or assist in ongoing research with JHU, outside university, government and industrial users
Oversee scheduling of tool activities.
Monitor performance of lab environment.
Support other MCP staff in keeping the facility running
Oversee demonstrations, workshops, etc.
Qualifications
Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
Experience with FIBSEM techniques including SEM imaging, EDS acquisition, Cathodoluminescence imaging, TEM sample preparation, EBSD analysis and processing, 3D slice and view and reconstruction
Experience with sample preparation and coaters
Ability to teach research methods and collaborate with University researchers
PhD Degree in Physical Science plus 2 yrs experience with FIB
