What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and want to use pioneering facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for the nation's security? If so, you could be the highly motivated individual Post-doctoral candidate we seek to contribute to the manufacturing process and product development of ceramic materials for Department of Energy (DOE) applications.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Perform active research and development areas include synthesis, processing, and characterization of electronic ceramic materials for power supply applications.
  • Interact with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds in the development and production of Active Ceramic materials and devices.
  • Be actively involved in new manufacturing process development while becoming familiar with the production lines and requirements of the ceramic components.
  • Contribute to technical meetings within Sandia National Laboratories and the national level, publish in leading peer-reviewed journals, and present work at technical conferences.

You must have the ability to learn quickly and prioritize multiple work assignments. Demonstrated organizational and communications skills are important for success in this position.

Qualifications We Require:
  • Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or closely related field conferred within five years prior to employment.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:
  • Technical experience with a demonstrated publication record related to materials fabrication and processing, with a focus in advanced ceramics or glasses.
  • Experience in inorganic material synthesis, processing, and/or characterization of lead-based ferroelectrics and zinc oxide-based varistor materials.
  • Experience with electrical properties measurements of materials.
  • Ability to conceive, develop, build, and qualify novel material evaluation tools.
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced/schedule driven environment.
  • Extensive work experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal and organizational skills; with an ability to work in a diverse team environment.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills, with the ability to develop and present ideas and results in oral and written form.
  • Experience in application of the scientific method; gathering, analyzing and presenting technical data for decision making/problem solving purposes.
  • A track record of leadership through involvement in extracurricular activities, including professional associations and/or technical conferences, mentorship, and/or supervisory roles.
  • Commitment to a culture of safety and security.

The Active Ceramics Value Stream at Sandia National Laboratories provides active ceramic elements for the Nuclear Weapons Enterprise with demonstrated value, performance, and confidence that meet customer delivery schedules. Also, the department provides a broad range of options for fabricating and machining ceramic components. Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
